When the Storm Doesn’t Stop the Sun: A Lesson from the Driver’s Seat

Yesterday’s drive home was one for the books.

The kind of drive where you grip the steering wheel tighter and whisper little prayers under your breath. It was pouring — not just a light drizzle, but the kind of rain that pounds on your windshield so hard it feels like the sky itself is falling. My wipers were working overtime, yet I could barely see the road ahead. The clouds were heavy, dark, and ominous — stretching in every direction.

Then, right in the middle of that storm, something beautiful happened.

As I squinted through the downpour, I noticed a break in the clouds — a perfect circle of light. The thick, dark canopy above had opened just enough to reveal a slice of brilliant blue sky. And through that small window, the sun was shining. It wasn’t enough to stop the rain, but it was enough to remind me that the sun had never stopped shining at all. It was still there, steady and constant, even when the storm tried to hide it.

And then I caught a glimpse in my side mirror — a rainbow. A huge, vibrant arc stretched across the sky behind me. Rain in front, sunlight above, and a rainbow behind.

It was a tender reminder that even when the storm surrounds you, His promises are still behind you, His presence is still above you, and His light will break through.

How often do we find ourselves driving through spiritual storms — barely able to see the road, unsure of what’s ahead, and tempted to pull over and give up? Yet even then, God reminds us that His presence is not dependent on clear skies. He doesn’t wait for the rain to stop before showing up. Sometimes, He shows up in the rain — breaking through the clouds to remind us that He’s still in control.

The rainbow in my mirror brought Genesis 9:13 to mind: “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.” It’s God’s reminder that He’s faithful. That no matter how fierce the downpour, His promises still stand.

So here’s the moral of the story:

When life feels like a storm and you can’t see what’s ahead, don’t forget to look up — and don’t forget to look back. God’s light is still breaking through, and His promises still follow you. The rain might blur your vision for a while, but the sun hasn’t stopped shining. It’s just waiting for the right moment to break through and remind you: the same God who paints the rainbow is the One guiding you safely home.
